Azadeh Sefidkaran received her BA in graphic design in 2004 from Shariati University, Tehran, and her MA in art research from Tehran Art University in 20??. She designed and registered her first logo in 2001 and continued to work in the graphic design industry for several years before leaving the commercial design to teach art at vocational schools and universities. Azadeh further pursued her art and design education with Babak Etminani, Reza Abedini and, Alireza Jahromi among others.
Having done her theses on the historic Harat painting school and the history of Iranian illustration during the mid-twentieth century, Azadeh has had a keen interest in Persian art and Architecture. In her series of oil paintings called “Silent Observers”, these intricately-designed traditional spaces become populated with young women and teenagers, a demography she knows very well thanks to her years of teaching art at all-girls schools; the paradoxical presence of young, care-free females playing around and taking selfies with their smartphones against traditional, patriarchal architectural settings echo the societies’ changing attitudes and values. As the series developed, inspired by the Persian painting traditions, the artist opted for a purer and brighter color palette and a diminishing depth in her compositions.
For her new series, she brings her works even closer to the Persian illustration esthetics by taking her female characters into flattened imagined landscapes full of motifs and governed by a multi-spatial hierarchy
