Silent Observers
The idea of painting “Silent Observers” came to me while I was watching my students wander through historic buildings. These high-spirited young women are surrounded by these old structures but they are rather alienated from them, being preoccupied mostly with themselves rather than admiring the architecture. Clad in uniforms, they are taking selfies in a, as if trying to connect the present time to the past in a fleeting moment. Their pictures bridge the gap between generations and link yesterday to
tomorrow, so that a parallel universe of different temporal layers may be born in our online reality. I have created these representational works using oil techniques. Certain colors, however, come from my imagination, and some forms are manipulated here and there.
In “Silent Observers”, the elegant yet somber, paternal space of these old buildings is disrupted, even ridiculed in a way, by the young women’s disinterest, appearing to be in clear contrast to the figures. Keywords: oil painting, traditional architecture, woman, tradition, selfie, alienation
